Algorithms are systematic, step-by-step procedures to solve computational problems efficiently. As a result, their design and analysis constitute one of the core areas within Computer Science.

The Algorithmic Research Group at the Mathematics Department of the University of Ioannina, Greece, is dedicated to the study, development, and teaching of algorithms. The focus of the research group is mainly on the design and the analysis of efficient algorithms as well as on the development of combinatorics. As the primary subject of research, algorithms are investigated mathematically as well as empirically.

Our Research Areas

  • Algorithm Design and Combinatorics
  • Graph Theory and Graph Drawing
  • Information Visualization
  • Map Labeling

Student Opportunities

There are many different options for doing your Bachelor's or Master's thesis project in our group. Thesis projects in our group range from theoretical to experimental, and they can either be internal or with an industrial partner of your choice. For concrete examples you can have a look at the list below, containing master's theses that were supervised by people from our group.

  • A. M. Ntasiou, Engineering Barnette's Conjecture with SAT, Dept. of Mathematics, U. Ioannina, ongoing.
  • G. Velissaris, Linear Layouts With Biarcs, Dept. of Mathematics, U. Ioannina, 2024.
  • M. E. Pavlidi, Linear Graph Layouts of Advanced Data Structures, Dept. of Mathematics, U. Ioannina, 2023.

If you are interested in doing a project with us, please contact Maria Eleni Pavlidi at m.e.pavlidi@uoi.gr.
